Employees at A-LIGN take many different paths – that’s why we spent time sitting down with Director of Marketing, Taylor Mortti, to talk about how her path from intern to Director of Marketing at A-LIGN.
How did you get involved with A-LIGN?
As a student at the University of South Florida, I was looking for an opportunity to expand my marketing knowledge while I was still in school. My career at A-LIGN started in 2015 when I was offered the opportunity to start as an intern at that time.
What started as a fall internship has bloomed into a career for me in the last four years, where I have grown from Marketing Intern to Digital Marketing Specialist, to Digital Marketing Manager, to my role today as Director of Marketing.
Wow, that’s a lot of growth. What has made you successful at A-LIGN?
When I started at A-LIGN, the marketing team consisted of myself and one other person. What this meant for an organization that was growing rapidly is that I had exposure to everything. I was suddenly responsible for anything from writing copy for the website, researching best practices for email marketing, learning about the service lines, working with Subject Matter Experts to develop relevant content. This period gave me the exposure and opportunity to learn about a lot of different areas within marketing that accelerated my growth.
The big differentiator for me was the accountability factor. Whether you’re an intern all the way up to the C-suite, A-LIGN can develop talent by creating a culture of accountability. This culture meant that as I grew and took on increasingly large projects, I understood my role and that the product was ultimately a reflection of me. This resulted in me creating work that I cared about and was proud about and drove success for me.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
After growing up as a competitive swimmer, upon starting my career at A-LIGN, I was searching for a competitive community to be involved in. I ended up starting CrossFit, learning about Olympic Weightlifting, and now I’m competing in an Olympic Weightlifting meet for the first time in a few weeks! It’s been fun to learn something new and challenge myself in a different way. Plus, it’s always funny when I tell people I can throw 150 pounds over my head.
What is the biggest barrier or obstacle you have had to overcome to be successful in your role?
The growth at A-LIGN has been so immense that no two days are the same. Every single day, we experience new challenges to overcome. However, this is one of the things that keeps me engaged in my role is the challenge of continuing to grow the company in a way that is sustainable and allows us to create a customer and employee experience that is memorable.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I have loved the process of growing the marketing team. In the last year, we’ve gone from four team members to 10, and being able to build this team has been a great accomplishment for A-LIGN in our ability to deliver quality work, implement new strategies, and watch the team grow professionally.
What is the best advice you could give someone like yourself trying to break into our industry?
My biggest piece of advice would be to connect with as many people as possible, understand their role, and just gain knowledge about the industry. There is a high barrier to entry on the knowledge side, so taking the time to ask questions and understand the application is key to being successful. Marketing touches so many pieces of the business, so even someone who you wouldn’t expect to interact with a marketing role could potentially uncover areas to build efficiency or expand a brand.
What is your motto/personal mantra?
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. I try to take a methodology where we walk before we run in general to build a framework for continued success.
