CLIMBERS at A-LIGN take many different paths throughout their journey. Being innovative in the organization and industry is celebrated through our annual value awards at CLIMB, A-LIGN’s annual teambuilding and training event. This year, Stephanie Cox is the winner of the “Innovate Constantly” award. We spoke with Stephanie about her contributions to A-LIGN and what she wants people to know about her journey working at A-LIGN.
Where are you from? How did your journey at A-LIGN begin?
I graduated from college in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in African Studies and History (double major) with a minor in English from Georgetown University. I worked for several years before deciding to return to school at Florida Gulf Coast University. Analytics and problem solving were an interest to me, and I graduated with a Masters in Accounting in 2005.
A-LIGN stood out as I searched for new opportunities. Many of the companies I worked at previously had matured in their lifecycle, whereas A-LIGN was in a high-growth phase. Rather than looking at how to cut costs, A-LIGN’s focus was on how to invest and set up the company for success in the future.
How would you describe your role as Vice President & Controller?
In summary, I am responsible for overseeing the accounting team. We collect money from our customers, pay vendors, handle payroll activity and close the financial books, amongst other tasks. We celebrate the beginning of each month with a team potluck to power through our busiest time.
What was it like winning the “Innovate Constantly” award at CLIMB?
I was surprised! The people I work with every day know that I am passionate about innovation, but it felt great for it to be acknowledged at CLIMB by coworkers outside of the accounting team. In most organizations, it’s very common for accounting to feel isolated because other teams do not understand what we do on a day-to-day basis. We are fortunate to be very integrated and have great working relationships with our fellow CLIMBERS.
Why do you believe you were nominated for the “Innovate Constantly” award? How do you continue to climb in your role?
When confronted by problems, I love to figure out how to solve them. Since starting at A-LIGN, my team has tackled many of the barriers to success. We have shortened the monthly close cycle from over 30 days to one week, made the processes and structure around accounts receivable and collections more efficient, and have implemented a new revenue recognition module.
When understanding how to accomplish our goals, we do not ask the question, “How have we done in this past?” Instead, we ask, “Is there a better way to do this? If so, let’s explore the options.” By going about the problem-solving process this way, we can find solutions that are more effective and efficient.
What do you like to do for fun outside of A-LIGN?
My two teenagers, Gabriel and Darien, keep me busy. I like to travel with my family, especially taking advantage of any opportunity to take a cruise to the Caribbean. After CLIMB this summer, my family stayed out west for a week, and the highlight of the trip was visiting Yellowstone National Park.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I love action movies, specifically disaster movies!
If you could describe A-LIGN in one word, what would it be?
Why do you say dynamic?
The opposite of dynamic is static, and that’s not A-LIGN. We are constantly evolving as an organization, taking chances and we’re not afraid to try new things.
What do you wish people knew about working at A-LIGN?
It’s an exciting time to be part of an organization like A-LIGN! Any organization that sees revenue and sales growth over 50 percent in one year is exceptional. That type of environment creates energy, momentum and opportunity within the organization.
