CLIMBERS at A-LIGN come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. But they’re unified in their commitment to quality, teamwork and innovation. This year’s winner of the Todd Skinner Award, Patrick Sullivan, is no exception. We spoke to Patrick about his journey at A-LIGN, what he’s learned in his tenure as Director of Enterprise Accounts and how it felt to be recognized at CLIMB.
Where are you from? How did you get involved in cybersecurity?
I’m from Greeneville, TN. It’s best known for being home to the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson and as the birthplace of Davey Crockett.
I had the opportunity to play football and soccer at a small, southern Baptist college — unfortunately, it didn’t go well. I quickly pivoted and decided the best course of action was to get into technology and electronics. From there, numerous doors opened. One instructor introduced me to a computer builder while I was studying electronics and I started working as a computer technician. This led to building computers, then building networks. In 2005 I was approached to take on an IT leadership role at a regional medical group, and I’ve been in IT management and technology ever since.
How long have you been at A-LIGN? What’s changed during your time here?
I’ve been at A-LIGN since December of 2017; much has changed, and our growth has been explosive. I’ve been part of other rapidly growing companies and they didn’t grow with solid structure — at A-LIGN we’re intentional about how we’re growing. A-LIGN has done a great job of making sure its employees know the effects of this growth are just part of the larger cycle of seasons the company will experience. Seasons of growth, seasons of work and seasons of rest.
What attracted you to A-LIGN?
The people. CLIMBERS at A-LIGN are so passionate and professional about what they do. The high integrity displayed in every interaction, both internal and external, is second to none. What we’re doing is different from our competition because of that commitment to quality.
How did it feel to receive the Todd Skinner award?
It was completely humbling. I think about all the incredible people who work here — all that I’ve met — and I feel so grateful for the honor of receiving this award at CLIMB.
If you could describe A-LIGN in one word, what would that be?
The transparency between us and our clients makes our partnerships unique in the industry. We deliver value from start to finish, benefitting all involved.
Why do you think cybersecurity audits are important?
For many of our clients, it’s the cost of doing business. In today’s modern marketplace, organizations can’t succeed without having effective cybersecurity measures in place — and that’s where A-LIGN comes in. We’re here to help them understand how they compare with a standard within an industry — identifying misalignments, helping them mature and navigate the scope of their needs and put them in a better position to have an effective system in place.
What do you do for fun outside of A-LIGN?
Recently I built a treehouse for my kids — family time ranks above everything else.
Which of our values — Be All In, Commit to Quality, Do the Right Thing Always, Innovate Constantly — do you identify the most with? Why?
Be All In — for me, what we do is very personal, especially when it comes to the relationships we create with our clients. Valuing those relationships and tending to them with professionalism and care is of the utmost importance to my team.
What is your biggest accomplishment at A-LIGN?
I’ve had the opportunity to help create and facilitate our in-service program. Once a month we get together as a team and one of our team members leads the group on a thirty-minute session on what we’re doing. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how these meetings have benefitted both our CLIMBERS and clients. 90 percent of our clients are grateful that we’re there to help them through a process that can often cause fear, uncertainty and doubt. Having that closing conversation with our clients is a rock star moment for most of my team — knowing we’ve earned their trust.
