Employees at A-LIGN take many different paths – that’s why we spent time sitting down with Project Coordinator, Julie Pernia, to talk about her path from Colombia to her role at A-LIGN as Project Coordinator.julie-pernia-featured

  1. Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Colombia. My mom then moved to the United States to create better opportunities for my brother and me. We then joined her in New York when I was 13.

When I turned 22, I decided to venture out and move to Florida. I drove down by myself and have loved it [in Florida] since then!

  1. What is your role at A-LIGN?

As a Project Coordinator, at a high level, my role involves several activities from receiving closed contracts for audits to setting up all the resources necessary to ensure that they are completed. These tasks are essential to ensuring that the auditors and team members on the audit project understand the timeline, what is required of them, and the steps needed to complete the project.

  1. What is the most valuable lesson that you have learned at A-LIGN?

At A-LIGN, I have learned that you can find a way to get things done no matter what. Most companies might have a situation where they can’t do something, but at A-LIGN, we truly live by our value “Be All In” and do whatever it takes to get things done correctly.

  1. What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I love to cook. It’s my de-stressor – so if I’ve had a hard day, I go straight to the kitchen. My favorite thing to cook is Italian food. My husband just bought me a pasta maker, and it has been the most amazing thing.

  1. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding thing is learning something new every day. There’s just so much about this industry that you can learn, so I think that’s what keeps me coming into work every day. I walk out every day with something different that I have learned.

Also, because I am building the frameworks for the audits to be completed, I think it feels important to know that so many people are depending on me to ensure that they are done correctly.

  1. What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

So far, it has been receiving my Certified Associate Project Manager (CAPM) certification. It was such an important milestone in my career.

  1. How has A-LIGN helped you in your career development?

Aside from the certification, the opportunity to change careers has been huge for me. I was in finance for over 10 years and decided to switch my focus to project management. Additionally, being in the compliance space has helped me with the project management part, but I have also learned so much about compliance as well that I feel extremely well-rounded.

  1. What do you wish people knew about A-LIGN?

Other than the awesome benefits, although I think most people know about those, I would say that while we may not have the corporate structure that many companies have, we have a culture of trust that allows employees the space to ensure that their job is getting done. No one is waiting at your desk in the morning to ensure that you clock in at 7:59 am – people just get in on time or early because he or she’s passionate about his or her work.

  1. What’s your personal mantra?

Never sit still. There is just so much time and what you do with it is key. You can choose to settle and wait for things to come to you, but for me, it is just looking everywhere to see what I can get myself into whether it’s learning something new, following a dream, or going on a trip. I think it’s important to never stop moving.
