This year, Emily is the winner of the “Do the Right Things, Always” award. We spoke with Emily about her role, how she helps with onboarding new hires and what it was like to be recognized by her peers.
Where are you from? How did you get involved in cybersecurity?
I am from Austin, Texas and attended college at Texas A&M University. I believed I was going to school to become a doctor, but soon realized I wasn’t enjoying my classes. I switched to the College of Business and enrolled in information technology classes. After graduating from A&M, I worked at Ernst & Young in Dallas before joining the A-LIGN team.
What do you do in your role as a SOC Manager?
I am currently a SOC Manager working frequently with clients in Texas and California. I help with the planning phase of SOC audits, lead kick-off meetings with clients and the auditor(s), manage fieldwork and review the testing and report deliverables.
I ensure we are delivering quality reports to our clients following their audit.
How did you get involved in training SOC new hires?
Training has always been a passion of mine. I was thrilled when I was asked to be part of new hire training this year! I began helping with training in 2018 after another SOC manager and I realized there weren’t many technical SOC training materials for new hires. We created resources and materials for them and planned a series of online webcasts for all SOC auditors.
I love getting to interact with our new hires and auditors because it’s important to have a genuine connection with someone. I want to create a positive environment for our new hires as their first interaction with A-LIGN. If you can connect with your team, you can accomplish anything.
How did it feel to receive the “Do the Right Thing, Always” award at CLIMB?
Very exciting! I generally don’t like public recognition or being in the spotlight. I’m sure I told Scott, “I’m really nervous,” as I shook his hand at CLIMB! It’s an honor to be nominated and recognized by my peers, I didn’t expect it. Being remote is a challenge we all face, but I do my best to be available to my teams and support them in every way possible. I want to make sure A-LIGN’s commitment to quality is being upheld and that we’re doing the right thing, always.
How long have you been at A-LIGN? What has changed during your tenure?
I will have been with A-LIGN two years this fall, and so much has changed. A-LIGN has grown considerably since I started. It’s exciting to see how many people we’ve brought on and the size of our new hire classes continue to increase.
I serve as the co-chair for the first Women’s Network at A-LIGN, allowing us to see how many women we have within our company. A-LIGN’s made of roughly 38 percent of women, a great statistic in our industry. It’s encouraging to see how well-represented women are and it continues to grow!
Why do you believe you were nominated for the “Do the Right Thing, Always” award?
We complete our audits accurately and with integrity. That is, after all, what we’re presenting to our clients. When my team asks how to address a certain situation, I help them find the right solution. I want to help them understand what we do matters. It all circles back to integrity.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at A-LIGN?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to be confident. I tend to doubt myself in what I know, but having the support of my team and A-LIGN has taught me to be confident in my career.
What do you do for fun outside of A-LIGN?
My husband and I do a lot with our two-year-old daughter, Kylie. Our family likes to read together, it’s an escape to what’s going on in life. I love working on puzzles, too. I could do that all day!
What is your motto/personal mantra?
Everything happens for a reason.
Regardless of your beliefs, there is a higher power at work and that everything falls into place. Even when you don’t understand in the moment, everything happens for a reason.
If someone is considering applying to work for A-LIGN, what would you tell them?
A-LIGN wants to help people succeed in their careers. Many employees feel trapped in their current positions or career when they long to do something else. When a SOC auditor wants to try a different service line or learn something new, we’re happy to help them succeed where they want to grow.
